What Is Prepainted Galvanized Steel Coil (PPGI)?

Prepainted galvanized steel coil uses hot-dip galvanized steel (GI) as the base substrate. The full layered structure includes:
  1. Carbon steel substrate
  2. Hot-dip zinc coating (Z40–Z275 g/m²)
  3. Chemical conversion pretreatment layer
  4. Epoxy primer
  5. Top coating (PE / SMP / HDP / PVDF)
  6. Back protective coating
The whole coating process is finished in factory under strictly controlled temperature, which ensures uniform paint thickness, stable adhesion and consistent surface quality. All coils can be directly roll-formed into roof sheets, wall panels and profiles without secondary on-site painting, greatly cutting construction time and labor costs.

Note: Do not confuse PPGI with PPGL.

PPGI: Prepainted Galvanized Steel Coil (GI zinc substrate)

PPGL: Prepainted Galvalume Steel Coil (55% Al-Zn substrate)

PPGL offers stronger anti-corrosion performance, while PPGI is more cost-effective for inland conventional projects.

Prepainted galvanized steel coil, widely known as PPGI coil, also called color coated galvanized steel coil, is one of the most popular coated metal materials for construction and manufacturing worldwide. It is produced by continuously roller-coating organic paint onto hot-dip galvanized steel coils before fabrication.

Unlike ordinary galvanized steel, PPGI gains double protection: sacrificial anti-rust from the zinc layer plus barrier protection from top paint coatings. Builders, metal processors, steel distributors and prefabricated house manufacturers choose prepainted galvanized steel coil thanks to its balanced cost, formability, decorative effect and weather resistance.

Key Advantages of Prepainted Galvanized Steel Coil

Dual anti-corrosion protection

The zinc layer provides sacrificial protection for cut edges; organic paint blocks moisture, rain and UV rays, slowing rust spread effectively.

Rich color options & stable appearance

Available in full RAL color system, matte, glossy and customized textures. Factory coating avoids uneven painting problems that occur with on-site spraying.

Excellent processability

Good bending, stamping and roll-forming performance. Suitable for making corrugated sheets, trapezoidal panels, gutters and metal doors.

Lower total project cost

No on-site spraying required. Less maintenance, fewer rework and longer service life compared with unpainted galvanized steel.

Wide environmental adaptability

Works well for inland industrial plants, warehouses, residential buildings and low-corrosion humid regions.

Common Coating Types for Prepainted Galvanized Steel Coil

Different topcoat materials decide weather resistance and service life, select based on project location:
  • PE Polyester Coating

  • Budget choice for inland projects. Service life: 6–8 years. Fit for ordinary warehouses, indoor panels and temporary buildings.
  • SMP Silicone Modified Polyester

  • Improved heat resistance. Suitable for areas with strong sunlight and medium humidity. Lifespan: 8–10 years.
  • HDP High Durability Polyester

  • High anti-fading and anti-chalking performance. Widely used for permanent inland factory roofing. Lifespan: 10–12 years.
  • PVDF Polyvinylidene Fluoride

  • Top-grade coating with outstanding UV resistance. For high-standard buildings.

  • Reminder: PVDF PPGI is still not recommended for severe coastal salt-spray zones; PPGL + PVDF is a better option for coastal projects.

Typical Applications of Prepainted Galvanized Steel Coil

  • Construction industry

  • Roofing sheets, exterior wall cladding, prefabricated steel structure buildings, warehouses, workshops, sandwich panel facades, rain gutters, roller shutters.
  • Home appliance manufacturing

  • Refrigerator shells, washing machine panels, air-condition casings.
  • Transportation & agriculture

  • Truck compartment panels, agricultural barn cladding, breeding equipment.
  • Interior decoration

  • Ceiling panels, metal partition boards, decorative metal profiles.

How to Choose Qualified Prepainted Galvanized Steel Coil

  1. Confirm substrate zinc weight

  1. For long-term outdoor use, choose ≥Z100; thin zinc coating leads to premature rust after coating aging.
  2. Match coating grade according to environment

  1. Inland permanent buildings: HDP or SMP. Temporary buildings: PE. Avoid using ordinary PE-PPGI for coastal high salt-spray areas.
  2. Check double-sided coating structure

  1. Require primer + topcoat on front surface and protective back coating. Single-sided painted coils easily corrode from the backside.
  2. Light colors extend service life

  1. White, light gray and silver grey reflect sunlight, reduce surface temperature and slow coating aging. Dark colors absorb heat and accelerate fading.
  2. Verify factory test reports

  1. Ask for salt spray test, adhesion test and weather resistance certification before bulk orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: What is the minimum order quantity for PPGI coil?

Most Chinese manufacturers accept MOQ starting from 20–25 tons for full container loading. Small trial orders can be negotiated.

Q2: What delivery terms can we get?

Suppliers usually offer EXW, FOB, CPT and CIF terms. Payment terms are generally 30% TT deposit upfront, balance against BL copy. L/C is unavailable for most steel traders.

Q3: Can prepainted galvanized steel coil be used near the sea?

Ordinary PPGI is suitable for areas over 15 km away from coastline. Within 5 km of shore with heavy salt spray, we recommend upgrading to PPGL prepainted galvalume steel coil to avoid early peeling and rusting.

Q4: How long can PPGI roofing last?

Service life depends on coating and climate. PE coating: 6–8 years; HDP coating: 10–12 years under normal inland outdoor environment with proper maintenance.
